Lost in Transit-lation #3: Antoinette's Sweets
This third generation sweet shoppe has been operating on the corner of Transit and French in Depew for over 65 years and serving family recipes that date back to the 1910's.
At a busy intersection in Depew, Antoinette’s Sweet is a 66 year old sweet shop that serves candies, chocolates and has a full ice cream parlor menu. The worn wooden booths, long ice cream bar, neon light signs, wood paneled walls and ice cream sundae’s served in metal dishes will transport you back in time.
The shop has a full retail section filled with a variety of classic sweets and their signature homemade chocolate (pictured below). You’ll find various clusters and bark, chocolate suckers shaped in fun designs, chocolate covered snacks and Buffalo classics like sponge candy and Charlie Chaplin. Some are pre-packaged and some are ordered by weight.
Ever since my grandparents would occasionally take me to the West Seneca location (which has since become a Nick Charlaps), I’ve always been drawn to Antoinette’s for their ice cream. As a child in the 90’s, sitting down at a table and getting ice cream sundaes served in massive metal bowls was a novel idea.
The ice cream menu has standard ice cream offerings with a list of customizable toppings, pre-set classic sundae options, milk shakes and old fashioned ice cream sodas.
My order hasn’t changed much over the years. I generally opt for either the Greek Mint Special (vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, homemade greek mints and mint syrup) or the Turtle Royal (vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, pecans and caramel - pictured above).
I honestly think as a child that seeing the neon green mint syrup put that sundae over the top, but it still works on my 40 year old mind. The Turtle is also quite good, however in all of my eating travels over the last 15 years my favorite Turtle sundae is at Condrell’s in Kenmore. But for any sundae the portions are quite large and covered with a generous amount of toppings.
For vibes alone, it’s absolutely worth stopping by Antoinette’s and treating yourself and the family to a nice sit down sundae.
